Soulrend - Dark Fantasy RPG – a large Minecraft modpack built on all the classic RPG adventure tenets. It features role-play, a progression system, creating a unique character, battles against dangerous enemies, as well as exploring many domains of life and activities. Here, the player will have plenty to do, and tough battles now depend not only on technical execution but also on preparation in advance with the choice of specific gear and skills. The key difference from other projects is the presence of beautiful, fluid animations that accompany the player both in peaceful life and in large-scale battles. Welcome to dark fantasy!

To begin with, you aren’t playing as a generic dummy, but as a prewritten character with starting attributes and traits. Which ones exactly? That’s for you to decide. Right after creating the world, a setup window will appear where you can create your own protégé or leave everything to chance (a separate tab during creation). Overall, the player chooses two parts: origin and class.

Don’t be afraid of getting confused or lost. You’ll know the strengths and weaknesses of every option in advance. Let’s start with race. This is the very first choice, and it affects many aspects. First of all, it determines the player’s starting location and attributes. There’s also a difficulty gradient. By design, playing some classes will be easier than others. The most basic option is a human, who doesn’t differ from a standard Minecraft character. Things get more interesting after that. Other races (goblins, orcs, dwarves, elves) have their own quirks—both strengths and downsides. There are also neutral traits like height, which can be helpful in one case and harmful in another. For clarity, all such traits are color-coded (red, yellow, and green).

As for class, it defines your affiliation, your set of skills, and passive bonuses. Some can use magic, some are more durable, while others focus on melee weapons and close-quarters combat. Whatever you choose, it will have its own strengths and weaknesses. There are even support builds aimed at team play with your friends. The game opens up even more when you assemble a full team that can cover each other’s needs and vulnerabilities.

Information plays a major role in immersion. You could turn to online sources, but why do that when the modpack adds dedicated books meant to help you? There are 4 in total, each for a different purpose. The first tells you about the local world’s fauna, their habits, their drops, and tactics for fighting them. The second is a compendium of combat techniques and lets you unlock new abilities over time. The third tracks player progression and introductory quests you can complete for rewards. You’ll gradually fill the progress bar until you move to the next tier. The fourth and final one introduces the player to specific mechanics and crafting such as magic staves, scrolls, and special potions. Separate chapters are also devoted to the stages of the game (early, mid, late). Each is accompanied by particular events and opens access to new content.

From the very start of the campaign, you’ll have your own level, which can be raised to unlock new abilities and passive boosts and to increase your base attributes. However, the world around you is also tied to its own difficulty by level. If neutral mobs and early enemies in the starting area are around levels 1–5, then later zones will see monsters scaling up to 20, 30, 40, or even 50. This kind of difficulty progression both blocks your access to areas where you’re not meant to be yet and pushes you to learn the game’s fundamentals and its mechanics so you can grow and fight enemies at your level.

At first, you’ll encounter only basic opponents you might remember from the early game. For example, in a desert town we ran into zombies and skeletons around levels 1–3. Even they differ from their standard Minecraft counterparts thanks to animated movements and nonstandard equipment. Such an enemy can cause trouble for an unprepared player, to say nothing of nastier creatures whose strategy isn’t just closing in and dealing direct damage.

Enemies evolve—but what about you? To create your own builds and strengthen particular attributes, there’s a separate progression window where you spend points earned when leveling up. Broadly, this large circle can be divided into combat and peaceful enhancements that help with progression. Some affect combat stats and the acquisition of new abilities, while others are responsible for peaceful profession development, faster experience gain, more comfortable exploration, and so on. In one way or another, everything here is useful: some enhancements are straightforward and require no special skill, while others need a more deliberate approach to fully unlock their potential.

These enhancements can be divided into four categories: common (gray), elite (purple), legendary (yellow), and unique (orange). The higher the category, the more impactful the bonus. A frequent goal is to unlock as many legendary and unique bonuses as possible while skipping basics to save points. You can bypass the long, costly paths from the very center by using portals. They don’t grant anything by themselves, but they open “shortcuts” to other branches so you can pick only the bonuses your build needs, skipping the filler ones.

We’ve already mentioned this in passing, but let’s go into more detail. Every creature and even elements of the environment here have received smooth, gradual animations, thanks to which tense battles and interactions—even with ordinary villagers—feel far more dynamic and alive. The author also didn’t forget animations for weapons and crafted objects like trapdoors and doors. At the same time, these additions are lightweight and let you enjoy this experience without serious limitations.

The visual style of the modpack deserves special mention. It includes shaders and a resource pack that touches every block in the build. If you’re already bored with the default blocks, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. You can see how accents are created, and blocks and items have a pronounced color palette, clear edges, and volume. You’ll notice it both in wide shots and upon closer inspection.

· YUNG`S Better Gungeons. A mod that significantly updates the game’s existing dungeons, affecting both the visual style and structural content.
· Corpse. A modification that adds corpses to the game—for both mobs and the player. Bodies remain for some time after defeat, adding realism, and each mob has its own model.
· Handcrafted. Responsible for adding a wide variety of furnishings. Furniture adds more variety and is used in regular buildings as well as serving as set dressing for some dungeons.
· Incendium. Greatly expands the Nether and combines its biomes into unified structures. It also adds special equipment and Nether-unique mobs that can be tough to defeat.
