FTB StoneBlock 4 is a modern reimagining of the underground survival format, created by the FTB team for Minecraft 1.21.1. If the previous StoneBlock entries were about surviving in a “stone box” with a focus on resource generation, the fourth part emphasizes atmosphere, lore, handcrafted dungeons, story, and extended progression through a unique mechanism called the World Engine. The pack feels not like a set of mods, but like a cohesive adventure world.

The starting point looks familiar: the player appears in a small stone room. However, after just a few minutes they get into the main space of the pack — the Garden of Stone, a huge amethyst underground garden that serves as the central hub. Here you can find many portals, architectural structures, and, most importantly, the Echoes, spirit-like NPCs who act as teachers, traders, and story characters. The Echo of Guidance explains the basics of the world, introduces the mechanics, and starts the first quest chain.

In the Garden of Stone, the player has access to several different starting zones: industrial ruins, a dark cave, a mangrove ravine, a bright cherry grotto, and others. They differ in appearance, atmosphere, difficulty, and amount of resources. This choice makes each new playthrough unique. Some starting bases are safe and bright, others are dark and dangerous, forcing you to look for light sources and act carefully.

The FTB Quests quest book plays a key role in this pack. Through it, pieces of lore are delivered, new mechanics are explained to the player, access to Echoes shops is opened, and connecting story chains are given. The chapters are divided into fundamental topics, each revealing a new stage of progression. At the same time, the structure remains flexible: to move forward, it is not necessary to complete absolutely everything — many tasks are optional, and the playthrough can be nonlinear.

The Echoes in the hub define the purpose of quests, trade unique goods, and give access to new features. They add an atmosphere of a “fallen civilization” to the pack, in which you are a new explorer restoring its former greatness.

The World Engine is a huge ancient multiblock that must be restored and upgraded throughout the entire playthrough. It is the linking element between mods, recipes, and gameplay systems. Almost all high-level technologies, complex items, and transitions between stages of the game are tied to its upgrades.

Each World Engine upgrade:
The player regularly returns to the engine, and it becomes the center of the base — not only technically, but also story-wise.

Vaults are the key element of the expedition part of the pack. These are handcrafted dungeons with puzzles, traps, combat, and important resources. They are fully integrated into the story, so it is impossible to complete the game without them. Each dungeon has its own features: somewhere agility is important, somewhere combat skills, and somewhere you need to solve logical problems.

Vaults contain resources, upgrades, and items necessary for developing the World Engine. Unlike the “random” dungeons of many mods, Vaults are built by hand and have a neat design, which makes exploring them interesting and memorable.

At the beginning of the game, resources are obtained manually — with a brush from gravel, sand, and dust. Then mechanized variants of sieving appear. The culmination of the system is the Unearther — a glass chamber with a villager who processes the supplied material into useful resources. The efficiency of his work depends on upgrades, tools, and living conditions.
The pack introduces:
They trade unique items that are important for Vaults, the World Engine, and story branches.

The pack includes top modern mods: Create, AE2, magic mods, as well as unusual solutions like Fluid Cows. Despite the variety, all the mods work within a common structure, which makes the pack cohesive and well-balanced. Unlocking most mods is tied to progress in the World Engine and quests.

This modpack is significantly more atmospheric than its predecessors. The Garden of Stone is made as a living underground forest, the starting zones are beautifully designed, and the Vaults look like parts of a real ancient world. The whole game feels not like a gray stone box, but like a well-thought-out network of caves, ruins, and hidden halls.

FTB StoneBlock 4 is not just a new version of a popular pack, but a full reconception of the stoneblock genre. Instead of an empty box, the player gets a world with a story, the central World Engine mechanism, role-playing NPCs, dungeons, thought-out progression, and visual atmosphere. The pack combines tech mods, story, exploration, and automation into a single experience. It is perfect for those who enjoy long playthroughs, lore, connected gameplay, and underground adventures. For co-op, it is easily one of the best modern modpacks.
