Review Pathogen Monster plague

Pathogen: Monster Plague

The idea of infecting and turning villagers into creepy mutant creatures is not new even in the cubic world of Minecraft. The mod under consideration implements new unique mechanics that not only differ from similar projects but also do not cause a feeling of disgust from the appearance of the mutant mobs. All because quite cute dinosaur-like monsters will now appear in the game world. However, despite their relatively normal appearance, they are still quite dangerous and strong creatures capable of infecting all entities around them and thus should be feared.

Infection

You can get infected yourself or infect other mobs in several ways at once. The first way is to suffer an attack of an already existing mutant — which also applies both to peaceful and not-so-peaceful mobs.

The second way is to interact with a special infected liquid that randomly appears in the game world. It looks like something black and unpleasant and can be collected in a bucket if necessary. Mobs trapped in this liquid eventually turn into new mutants.

If you or other mobs have already been infected, you can leave everything as it is or prepare a special antidote that removes pathogens from your body.

Mutants

The mutants here are not some distorted and disgusting-looking creatures but quite eye-pleasing dinosaurs. They are different in various biomes and also have several types inside one biome depending on which, they will be stronger or weaker. In fact, an experienced player has nothing to fear — the mobs here are quite well-balanced, and the strongest of them can be compared to the vanilla golem in terms of health and damage level. Others can be well defeated with an ordinary iron sword or bow. The mutants spawn not only in the Overworld but also in the Nether and even in the End.

The dropped loot depends on the mob type. The mutants mainly drop claws, fangs, scales, and elements of their natural shields, as well as tails and bones. These items are the main ingredients for crafting new unique armor and weapons.

Intermediate Form

The mutants, if they do not appear as they are initially, also have an intermediate form between a peaceful mob and a dinosaur.

All the in-game mobs, including hostile ones, can be infected. Oddly enough, even a golem can get infected, even though it can hardly be called living. Such incomplete forms are only slightly stronger than their vanilla originals but much more aggressive. They attack all non-infected mobs, actively trying to destroy them. If the former manage to survive, they will not get infected. Over time, the intermediary forms complete their transformation and become full-blown mutants.

After death, they drop the incomplete form moult.

Transformations

The mod adds ten new ingots for crafting armor and weapons. The first is of the reinforced steel and can be got quite simply: to do this, you will need to combine an iron ingot and bones dropped from the mutants or incomplete forms in a furnace.

Using this ingot and a special essence, you will be able to get eight more ingots related to different biomes and dimensions.

To create the essence, you will need stiff dropped by mutants from the desired biome or dimension.

In contrast, to create the chitin ingot, you will have to put in a lot of effort. To begin with, you will need to find the special catalyst for transformations. It is uncraftable and is naturally generated in the new structures.

After you click on the catalyst, you will see the crafting grid. You should put there the following ingredients: a netherite ingot, phantom membrane, and mutant tail.

You will thereby cause a rather terrible and destructive reaction, which can be harmful to everyone who finds themselves in the affected area, and at the place of the catalyst, you will eventually find the ingot you need — provided, of course, you put out the fire.

The ingredients for the chitin ingot are indeed valuable, but what you can craft from it is worth all the effort.

Armor

The mod adds quite a lot of new strong armor types. The simplest and cheapest among them is the pathogen armor. It is crafted from an incomplete form mould according to the vanilla crafting recipe and is similar to the diamond armor.

The second armor type is also quite easily crafted. It consists entirely of the mutant scales and also has characteristics equal to those of the vanilla diamond armor. However, unlike the pathogen armor, it gives +20% damage against mobs from the biome in which it was crafted. Thus, the armor from the scales of mutants of the mesa biome gives more damage to those very mutants. Accordingly, it comes in eight variants.

The last armor type is hardened. It does not require the scales but requires a lot of new ingots. The latter include the biome ingots and chitin ingots in a sufficiently large amount. Thus, the chestplate requires four chitin ingots and four biome ingots. To craft the helmet, you will also need a mutant tail. Such a chestplate has seven defense points, four durability points, and +2 knockback resistance. It is thus roughly equal to the vanilla diamond option but much stronger in terms of durability. Besides, this armor has additional buffs, such as +35% critical damage to enemies from the respective biome and the jump boost. Other bonuses depend on the kind of armor you are wearing. They include various characteristics peculiar to the biome: night vision, great strength in open terrain, poison resistance, and so on.

Weapons

The mod adds three weapon types to the game: the katana, slayer, and battle hook, the latter being both a weapon and tool. Like the new armor, they are based on the biome ingots, on which their main buffs and debuffs depend. Their basic characteristics are as follows: the katana has 13 damage points and 1.8 attack speed, the slayer can boast 28 damage points and 0.8 attack speed, and the battle hook inflicts 13 damage and has 1.1 attack speed.

As you can see, the new weapons are strong enough and quite finely balanced by inherent buffs and debuffs as well as by slowing down the attack speed.
